From the era that embraced all things fresh, fun and colourful. It is no surprise that novelty fruit was a big design hit for 1950s jewellery
Although there was a lot of interpretation in the designing of fruit jewellery, a lot of it was quite reaslistic looking.
THE CARMEN MIRANDA EFFECT
When we think of fruit and jewellery and costume, there is really only one icon we have in our minds. Someone who knew her apples from her bananas and that was singer entertainer Carmen Miranda. Portuguese born Carmen designed and made her own clothes and hats and had a truly South American vibe. Like a well shaken cocktail of flavours and fruits she got the party started.
Appearing in Hollywood films from 1940 to 1953. Her first film was 'Down Argentine way'.
The 'Brazillian Bombshell' she wore her fun personalitly on her sleeve with her vibrant and flouncy costumes and head gear and her fruit jewellery and accesories.

The most popular fruit from the 1950s included Cherry Earrings, Pineapple necklaces and lots of strawberry earrings and necklaces.
These ready ripened fruits suggested life, fun, temptation and variety. All things that were relevant to the 1950s period.
Coming out of the second world war were fruit was sparse (unless you were skilled enough to grow your own); this signified a change were you could pick it and eat it when you wanted and fruit jewellery showcased all this.
Also our newly refreshed sweet tooth craved those fruit flavours and fabulous colours, as with this poster for Rowntree's pastiles
